Kilkenny cruised to victory in Round 3 of the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship on a score line of 2-16–0-08 in UPMC Nowlan Park on Sunday.
Kilkenny began the game in a sluggish manner and failed to surge into an expected early lead. the two teams traded points throughout the first quarter of the game with the score level at 4 points apiece when referee Justin Heffernan signalled for the water break. The pick of the scores early on came from Kilkenny’s Katie Nolan and Ann Dalton (both from play) and a long-distance point from Limerick half-back Judith Mulcahy.
Kilkenny continued to be wasteful throughout the remainder of the first half but a combination of Limerick’s lack of firepower and the solid free taking of Windgap’s Denise Gaule extended Kilkenny’s lead to 0-08-0-04 at half-time.
Brian Dowling’s side improved immensely immediately from the second-half throw-in with points from Gaule and wing-forward Aoife Doyle stretching Kilkenny’s lead to nine points, 14 points to 5. A goal from Doyle, brilliantly finished by the Piltown woman, all but ended Limerick’s chances of getting their first victory of the season.
Gaule added another free and a goal from a penalty to finish with an impressive 1-7. Limerick missed a penalty of their own when Caoimhe Costelloe hit her shot over the bar for the final score of the game. Kilkenny scoring a total of 2-16 to limerick’s 0-08.
Kilkenny will not play again until the 28th of November where they will face the winner of one of the quarter-finals to be played next week.
